If an agent is the chef, a skill is the recipe. A recipe doesn’t cook the meal by itself. It tells the chef what steps to follow, what order matters, what to watch for, and how to adjust if something looks off. AI skills work the same way: they’re reusable pockets of know-how that help an agent handle a task properly.

This is where people often mix up tools and skills. A tool does something directly: send an email, search Stripe, read a file, create a task. A skill tells the agent how to approach that job well. Tools are the oven, knife, and blender. Skills are the recipe cards and cooking techniques.

That distinction matters because a chef with a kitchen full of equipment but no recipes is mostly improvising. Sometimes that works. Sometimes you get dinner; sometimes you get a mess. Skills are what make the agent reliable. They package the good habits, patterns, and steps so the agent doesn’t have to reinvent the process every time.

Take something simple like reviewing churn risk in Stripe. The tool side is obvious: the agent can pull failed payments, subscription changes, and account history through Stripe-related tooling. The skill is the recipe that says how to review that information: check for repeated payment failures, look for plan downgrades, compare recent support notes, and then draft the next best action. The tool gets the ingredients. The skill explains how to cook with them.

In a second brain, skills are how the system starts to feel personal. You can have one skill for how to summarise meeting notes, another for how to triage tasks, another for how to review client billing, another for how to draft updates in your own style. The agent loads the right recipe for the job, then uses the available tools to carry it out.

That’s also why skills are useful even when they don’t “do” anything by themselves. A recipe card is passive until a chef picks it up, but it still changes the outcome completely. In the same way, a skill gives structure to the agent’s thinking before it acts.

So the cleanest mental model is this: the agent is the chef, the skill is the recipe, and the tools are the kitchen equipment. Once you see it that way, the whole stack gets easier to explain. MCP servers open the pantry and the cupboards. Tools let the chef handle the ingredients. Skills tell the chef how to make the dish.
